Communications on Communication

Introduction

I started compiling this particular collection of articles back in 1999 for my friend and guru, Nelson Bond. Nelson was at one time a well known science fiction writer who later turned to radio and ultimately ended up writing for television. Mr. Mergenthwirker 's Lobblies, based on one of his best known short stories, was the first full length play on network TV back in 1946 when the NBC TV network consisted of Boston, New York, and Washington. Nelson, who is 17 years older than I, is still going strong. Arkham House has republished several volumes of his short stories from "the Golden Age of Science Fiction," and has at least one more volume in the works. He has been inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and has received an honorary doctorate from Marshall University (where years ago he took every course they offered in philosophy but never bothered to graduate).

I don't have any illusions about the literary quality of my own articles, but I thought Nelson might find some of them amusing. And after all, he is perhaps the most responsible for my attempts at writing. He enjoyed the 1999 draft, but, unfortunately, macular degeneration will prevent him from reading this present anthology. He takes his vision problems in stride, however. "If it was good enough for Milton, it's good enough for me," he once told me.

In 2000, I went through Communications on Communication in an attempt to catch typos and other errors, and finally, I fought my way through Microsoft Word to get the text in some sort of uniform format to match the other two sections of the book (which were done with far less trouble in WordStar). The local print shop will run off a few copies for a select group of friends, I will send copies to my grandchildren (who won't read them for years if ever), and then turn to other things.
