Lee
Goeller has passed away
This email was sent by Lee
Goeller's son Larry, on August 9, 2011.
Dear friends, relations,
and colleagues of Lee Goeller:
It is with sadness that I report to you that my father
passed away last week. He was found in his home by the
police on Wednesday morning, August 3, after I failed to
reach him for our usual weekly chat the previous evening. He
collapsed and died sometime Monday evening or Tuesday
morning, apparently quite suddenly and without pain. He had
been complaining in recent months of being especially tired,
which suggests he died of congestive heart failure. He was
about two weeks short of his 86th birthday. His wife, Nan
Goeller, died several years ago.
My brother Jim and I had
his body cremated, per his request. He asked for no service
and no flowers, although those who feel the need may make a
contribution on his behalf to the ASPCA or your local animal
shelter. (He had one or more cats, usually strays or shelter
animals, most of his life; I have taken possession of Bob,
his most recent acquisition.)
Dad always asked that, when announcing his death (all of you
were on his Christmas card list), each of you think of some
happy or invigorating interaction that you had with him. He
always felt that he was fortunate to live his life "in more
luxury than Louis XIV," and at "the pinnacle of history." He
got to play a small but very real role in the digital
revolution at Bell Labs in the 1960's, and he got to
"perform" his seminar on PBX's (a type of telephone
equipment, for the non-engineers) for many years. He died in
the house he lived in for over 40 years, surrounded by his
beloved books and the most recent edition of The New York
Times.
Please pass this e-mail, and the news of my dad's passing,
to anyone not on the address list above that you feel should
know. On behalf of my father, thank you all for your years
of love and friendship. No one appreciated it more than he.

Introducing Lee Goeller
From 1974, when he left RCA to become a
consultant, right up to the present, Lee Goeller has written hundreds of articles on
telecommunications, covering technology, business applications,
industry structure, regulatory policy and much more. Many appeared in
the the industry's leading periodicals, including Business
Communications Review, Teleconnect, and Telemanagement.
Others were published in stand-alone reports, or as books. Most are now
out of print and unavailable.
Lee's writings constitute an invaluable resource
for anyone interested in business telecommunications, or in the
evolution of the U.S. telecom industry over three most critical
decades of its history. Some specific references are out of date
(does anyone remember the Danray
PBX?) but the basic concepts and principles are remarkably timeless.
We’ve created this website to make Lee's ideas,
insights and opinions available to a new generation of telecom
customers, vendors, and designers. Lee has recently written new
introductions to many of the articles, and we have included those
whenever possible.
